In addition to the 100-hour Intensive TEFL/TESOL Certificate offered face-to-face as well as the 120-hour Online TEFL/TESOL Certificate, CESL provides students the opportunity to add classroom teaching experience through an on-site Practicum. Many institutions abroad require that students who have completed an online TEFL/TESOL Certificate have at least some classroom experience through which they learn how to apply the theoretical knowledge of Second Language Acquisition theory, ESL/EFL teaching methodologies and classroom management techniques to the classroom.
The Practicum is only available to those who already have a TEFL/TESOL Certificate. Students who have not obtained their TEFL/TESOL Certificate at CESL need to contact the Teacher Training Coordinator before applying in order to obtain approval.
Students are required to enroll in one of CESL's five academic sessions throughout the year, but have flexibility to complete the required hours at the times that work for them and the CESL faculty member assigned as their mentor (see session dates below). CESL offers two Practicum options, based on the number of hours of teaching and observation required:
20-Hour Practicum
The 20-hour Practicum combines 17 hours of classroom observations and 3 hours of teaching experience in the ESL classroom under the supervision of a CESL mentor. The 20-hour Practicum is available during CESL academic year and must be completed within one of our five scheduled eight-week academic sessions.
40-Hour Practicum
The 40-hour Practicum combines 34 hours of classroom observations and 6 hours of teaching experience in the ESL classroom under the supervision of a CESL mentor. The 40-hour Practicum is available during CESL academic year and must be completed within a scheduled sixteen-week semester or two consecutive eight-week sessions.
In order to enroll in a Practicum, applicants must have completed one of the following:
- 100-hour Intensive TEFL/TESOL Certificate
- 120-hour Online TEFL/TESOL Certificate
- A TEFL/TESOL Certificate with another institution.
