This course is designed to train aspiring language teachers in the fundamentals of EFL teaching, as defined by the TESOL International Association’s position statement on TEFL/TESL/TESOL certificate programs. The curriculum is firmly grounded within contemporary teaching models and best practices. It has been designed to not only give you the necessary knowledge to serve as an effective teacher of English, but also the critical insights, understanding and awareness necessary to apply these concepts.
This is a face-to-face, four-week course that is offered twice in the summer. Instruction is delivered on the University of Arizona campus by CESL faculty together with an online component. It includes 70 hours of coursework (Second Language Acquisition Theory, Methodology, Practicum Seminar, Classroom Management, and Assessment), and 30 hours of teaching Practicum. This course includes the following:
- a two-hour orientation the week before classes start
- classes from 5:30 to 8:30 pm every weekday
- observations of at least 12 hours classes in CESL different ESL programs during the day
- a teaching Practicum with actual English language learners from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm on Saturdays
- graduation ceremony on the last Saturday.
⇒ Students who need a 120-hour TEFL/TESOL Certificate can supplement this course with a 20-hour Practicum or a 20-hour Online Extension. The 20-hour Online Extension can be completed at the same time as or within a month after completing the 100-hour Intensive TEFL/TESOL Certificate course. The 20-hour Online Extension consists of three modules: English Language Fundamentals, Language and Culture, and Trends in Language Teaching complete on a self-paced basis. Trainees are required to take a quiz and prepare a written assignment at the end of each module and submit the three assignments at the end of the course together with a short reflective essay.
