What is conditional admission?
Conditional admission refers to an applicant being academically admissible to the University of Arizona, but the applicant still needs to meet the English proficiency requirement. Conditional admission for graduate admission is determined by each department. Consult your intended graduate program's website or contact the department to learn whether or not your program offers conditional admission.
I don’t yet have conditional admission from the UA, but I would like to study in the Grad U-Track Pathway. What can I do?
Don’t worry. You can start in the Online Graduate U-Track from home, and then you can apply for conditional admission to the University. You must apply for conditional admission at the University of Arizona through Graduate College Admissions. Once you have conditional admission to a graduate program, you can then apply to the face-to-face U-Track Pathway program and receive your I-20 (the immigration document you’ll need to get your F-1 student visa). Alternatively, you can also enroll in our Intensive English Program, which meets entrance requirements for the face-to-face U-Track Pathway Program. If beginning in the Online Graduate U-Track program, you can transfer to study at CESL, on the Arizona campus, any time. Just contact the CESL admissions office to learn how (firstname.lastname@example.org).
Will I take university classes?
In the Online Graduate U-Track Program, you will not be earning credit, nor will you be taking any university classes. However, the ESL program is designed to introduce you to the reading, writing, and research in your chosen field of study, thereby to provide you with an experience of what will be required of you before you are fully admitted.
How long is each level?
How long will it take to finish my online U-Track Pathway studies?
CESL requires students to study in the program for 3 sessions (1.5 semesters).
Does my University Track Pathway GPA affect me once I'm fully admitted to the UA?
No. But they will determine your advancement through the program, as well as, your endorsement from the Online U-Track Pathway. Please see the student handbook for more information on advancement through the program.
If I complete one session of the Online Graduate U-Track Pathway, will I be automatically admitted to the UA?
No. You must complete all three 8-week sessions of the Online Graduate U-Track. With conditional admission, there are three common ways to fulfill UA’s English language requirement for full admission:
- Complete three sessions of the Online U-Track Pathway and receive CESL Endorsement with a 2.0 GPA in Level 10 (students must pass all classes with a C or higher to receive endorsement).
- Earn the required CEPT, TOEFL or IELTS score: Visit Graduate College admissions and/or your graduate program webpage for more information on requirements.
Can I participate in CESL clubs and activities once I'm enrolled in the U-Track Pathway?
Yes! However, clubs normally meet in person during Mountain Standard Time in Tucson. So, while your time zone may prevent you from being virtually present at some activities, you are highly encouraged to participate in CESL’s online clubs and activities as you prefer.
