About CESL

Since its founding in 1968, CESL has become a world leader in English instruction and offers a comprehensive education, with internationally recognized academic standards.

The Mission of the Center for English as a Second Language (CESL) at the University of Arizona is threefold:

  • To provide superior English language instruction to native speakers of other languages through excellent teaching, an engaging curriculum, and programs which support learning, collaboration, and community-building. Our activities prepare students for academic and professional success at the University of Arizona and in broader local and global contexts.
  • To serve the linguistic and professional development needs of the University of Arizona and the greater community by offering high-quality professional development for teachers, supporting research in language learning, providing program evaluation services, and developing and delivering curriculum in different contexts through collaborations with students, educators, and partners locally and globally.
  • To encourage respect for cultural and linguistic diversity through intercultural competence, professionalism, and collaboration both on and off campus in an effort to promote cultural understanding and overall student success.

 

Accreditation & Affiliations

All programs at the Center for English as a Second Language meet high standards of excellence, as CESL has been fully accredited by the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation. We invite you to learn more about our high-quality programs.

CESL abides by the  Code of Ethics set by NAFSA: Association of International Educators.

CESL's Facilities

CESL operates a 19,547 square-foot building of classroom and administrative space in the heart of The University of Arizona campus. Its building has been recognized by the U.S. Registry of Historic Places for its intrinsic value and southwestern architectural beauty

The Ernestine A. Neff Memorial Library hosts a collection of 3,500 volumes and periodicals on ESL methodology, curriculum development, program management and instruction for teachers, as well as reading carts for extensive reading in the classroom.

Capability Statement

CESL provides regular English language, academic preparation, and Teacher Training courses, as well as English language proficiency testing. In addition, special programs of English language instruction or Teacher Training for companies and educational institutions is available in Tucson or abroad.
